Historical Southern Australian Lighthouse Weather Observations

This project aims to recover, image and digitise the historical instrumental weather observations made at Southern Australian lighthouses since the mid-late 19th Century.   The main focus for this project are lighthouses in the Australian States of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.  It will be undertaken under the auspices of the international ACRE initiative and involve the Volunteer Unit (South Australia), Australian Meteorological Association at the Regional Office of the Bureau of Meteorology in Adelaide, the University of Giessen in Germany and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand (as part of the ACRE Antarctica regional focus).

This effort will link closely with the Southern Australian Storms and Extreme Sea Levels over the 20th Century project which involves CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research (CMAR), the Volunteer Unit (South Australia), Australian Meteorological Association and the National Tidal Centre (NTC), both at the Regional Office of the Bureau of Meteorology in Adelaide, the University of Melbourne and ACRE.
