ACRE Oceans (Antarctic and Southern Ocean 20C)

Location, inventory and imaging of historic marine data for ocean and sea areas around Antarctica and high southern latitudes.  Data recovered includes voyages to and from the target area, meaning that the oceanic coverage is global. The data are from ship's logbooks, many of which are dedcated meteorological logbooks.  The period covered is 1900 to 1980, with some early data in the 1840s from the Ross Antarctic Expedition 1839-1844.  Data has been recovered from research vessels, whaling ships, merchant ships and naval vessels.  The data are from marine archives in the UK, Norway, Finland and Chile.  The logbooks imaged include many from vessels making a high latitude transit of the South Pacific from Australia to Cape Horn, in the period 1900-1940.  Historic sea-ice observations make up a signigicant proportion of the data in the recovered images.
