Historical Southern Ocean and Antarctic Weather Observations

This project aims to recover, image and digitise the historical instrumental weather observations made by ships of various nations which traversed the Southern Ocean to Antarctic latitudes of the globe during the historical period.  It will especially look to uncover sources of atmospheric pressure, sea surface temperature and sea-ice measurements, particularly in the logbooks of these ships.   It will be undertaken under the auspices of the international ACRE initiative and involve UK Met Office Hadley Centre-based projects (including the potential ACRE South Africa focus under the Weather & Climate Science for Service Partnership (WCCSP) South Africa), the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand (as part of the ACRE Antarctica regional focus), ACRE Chile and potentially the evolving ACRE Argentina foci.
